YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - When you hear the words Thanksgiving food, turkey, stuffing and cranberries come to mind.

But parishioners at a Youngstown church may be thinking apples.

Saint Patrick Church is passing out apples this month to remind the congregation of the core reason many celebrate the season.

Father Ed Noga says the tradition was started by pilgrims who shared what they had during tough times.

Those who attended Mass on Thursday morning were encouraged to take an apple from the church's fruit basket.

The church members are being asked to share their apples with neighbors and friends who may be missing a loved one during the season.

Prayers are made throughout the month for the names of those listed on a banner hung in memory of the faithful departed.
