3 Ohioans arrested for possessing 'bath salts'

Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Federal officials in central Ohio are accusing three men of having 9,000 packages of the synthetic drug known as bath salts with intent to sell.

WBNS-TV reports that the trio made initial appearances in federal court in Columbus Tuesday. Agents said they were arrested the previous day after a shopping bag full of packages of the illegal drug was handed off.

Authorities alleged that the men intended to sell the bath salts in exchange for $80,000 and 5,000 units of synthetic marijuana.

Bath salts are crystalized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed or smoked. They can cause paranoia and hallucination, and their use has led to hundreds of calls to poison centers nationwide. Ohio lawmakers made them illegal in 2011.
