New non-profit to address causes of addiction, before addiction itself

Updated:

NILES, Ohio - A new non-profit in the area will aim to resolve the issues that lead to substance abuse before addressing the abuse itself.

Organizers of The Lateral Foundation met with Trumbull County officials Wednesday morning.

The foundation hopes to provide mental health counseling for both substance abuse and domestic violence to selected felons being released from prison.

The organization will also provide services like job training, education, and housing.

"We've got to start with the mind before we can treat the body," said CEO and founder Phillip Stern. "What we want to do is have them first meet with mental health professionals and try and find out what's the problem; why are you the way you are? Then you can help them with the other underlying issues."

Funding for the foundation is still in the works. They hope to be operating in the Niles area by the first quarter of next year.
