Youngstown group receives grant, encouraging local food production

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A local group that is encouraging people to buy and produce their own food has received a financial boost to help their cause.

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Cooperation has been awarded a $788,000 grant.

The money will be used to build and expand training centers at both the Iron Roots Urban Farm and Common Wealth Incorporated Kitchen Incubator.

Both places provide the tools needed to help low income families produce their own food and create the potential for employment opportunities.

Northeast Ohio currently produces about 3% of their own food. Experts say if that number grew to 25% it would create 27,000 new jobs.

The organization is one of 13 groups across the country to receive the grant.
