New Castle man jailed on charges he abused twin babies

Updated:

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he physically abused his twin infant daughters, each of whom he referred to as "it" when he allegedly tried to explain their serious head injuries to police.

Online court records don't list an attorney for 21-year-old Christopher Kozura, of New Castle, who was arrested Thursday on aggravated assault and other charges.

Police say they've been investigating since August, when Kozura's 4-month-old daughter was rushed to a hospital with bleeding on the brain. When Lawrence County welfare workers investigated, they learned the twin sister, Zailya, had been treated for a skull fracture days earlier.

Police say Kozura told them each girl had rolled off a bed or a couch and onto the floor, though doctors tell police the injuries could only have been caused by abuse.

The new rule adopted by the court Monday resulted from a decision last year in which the court declared part of a state law unconstitutional for limiting appeals by death row inmates seeking DNA tests.
