SALEM, Ohio - The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting that left one woman dead and a five-year-old boy severely injured.

It happened Monday afternoon at 2338 Route 45, at the intersection of Salmar Drive, just south of Salem.

Police say a 12-year-old girl got off the bus just before 4 p.m., entered the home and found the woman shot to death. Outside the residence, a five-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head but he was still alive.

The boy was life-flighted to Akron Children's Hospital for emergency surgery. His condition is not known at this time.

Columbiana County Sheriff Ray Stone said the department is not identifying any of the victims until all the family members are notified and they say they have no suspects at this time.

He said they called out their homicide task force and all the agents are running down leads. No weapon was found at the scene and no neighbor heard any gunfire.

BCI spent several hours there processing possible evidence.

Authorities say the victims are related but they do not believe they are mother and son.  They say there were three children who live in the house but the other two were not there at the time and are unharmed.
