Mahoning Commissioners pass 'bare bones' budget

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Santa won't be giving Mahoning County department heads everything they want for Christmas.

County Commissioners approved spending for the coming year that's similar to this year's budget.

Commissioners blame the recession, cuts to local government funding, as well as lower real estate and income revenues.

"It's a bare bones budget. I mean we did everything we possibly could to, you know, fortify what departments wanted and everybody gave us their wish list and of course if we had the money we would certainly want to give every department what they've asked for," said Mahoning County Commissioner Anthony Traficanti.

Sheriff-elect Jerry Greene tells 21 News that he's working on a plan to do more with less in the New Year. He believes he can re-open the jail by hiring 30 new deputies
