Warren gets extension on grant, will keep more firefighters on the job

Updated:

WARREN, Ohio – Several Warren firefighters will have a happier holiday, but are still wondering if they'll have their jobs this summer.

The Department of Homeland Security has yet to renew a grant which pays the salaries of about 20 firefighters.

But the city has been awarded a six month extension of the old grant.

"In this business, in this line of work response time is critical and we're able to keep more trucks staffed from multiple locations which results in decreased response time," said Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle.

Chief Nussle hopes to know by early next year whether they will receive the new grant. If not, he says the city's administrators and state auditor will decide if layoffs need to take place.
