The 100,000-square-foot neuroscience institute celebrates its grand opening, which was four years in the making.

The Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience will cap a week’s worth of coverage by the national and international media, important visits by local and state dignitaries, and its official grand-opening celebration with an all-day community event Dec. 8.

All eyes have been on Jupiter since Dec. 3, when the esteemed center for brain research opened its doors to some of the top Ph.D.s in the world – 80 employees in all. The mission of the institute is to understand how the brain and central-nervous system function in an effort to cure diseases and disorders, and better understand humanity. The 100,000-square-foot facility is on Donald Ross Road, next to Scripps Florida and near Abacoa.

The community event, Neuroscience Discovery Day, will feature a full slate of children’s, adult and family events that are free and open to the public. Waterfront Properties and Club Communities encourages all interested residents to come out show their support for one of the most important investments Florida has made in decades and find out how the high-tech facility will improve the quality of life and the value of northern Palm Beach County real estate.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., activities include science experiments, interactive labs, a poster contest for high-school students, a neuroscience-inspired design competition, musical performances by local school students, meet-and-greets with Max Planck scientists, a food truck with gourmet food and beverages, refreshment s for all ages. There also will be tours of the six-acre campus at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur location.

The building boasts several special features, including vibration-resistant construction to insure equipment accuracy, calibrated interior doors to limit drafts of air that might disturb experiments and an array of green features for a sustainable result. There is a 150-seat auditorium, 58,000 square feet of lab space and state-of-the art microscopes, imaging machinery and other instruments.

The Max Planck Society chose Jupiter as the site of its first research facility in the United States. It is named after the German scientist who won a Nobel Prize for physics in 1918, and is renowned for developing the quantum theory.

The Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience received $188 million in county and state funding, including $94.1 million from the Florida Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, $6.3 million from Florida Atlantic University and $260,000 from the town of Jupiter in the form of waived impact fees. It is expected the institute will hire another 50 employees and will effect $2 billion in economic activity.
