Mahoning County Prosecutor has budget concerns

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains says not receiving the full budget appropriation that he had requested could pose some problems.

Gains says a fund that he has used to supplement salaries is now exhausted and it means he could be at least $50,000 over budget.

The prosecutor says if cutbacks become necessary, they will be in the form of layoffs. "Unfortunately, my lawyers handle about 131 cases per year compared to other counties which only handle in the 80s. So the burdens going to shift to the remaining lawyers if there are indeed layoffs. I'm hoping to avoid that," Gains said.

Gains says he is hopeful that fourth quarter sales tax numbers will be strong in the county and allow for adjustments in the budget.
