Ohio teen stands trial in slaying of toddler

Updated:

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio teen is facing trial in juvenile court for the alleged rape and slaying of his 3-year-old half-sister.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that it will be the first jury trial of a minor ever in juvenile court in Summit County. It's scheduled to start Monday.

The boy was 15 when the crimes occurred in 2011. He turned 17 last month. If convicted, he could be confined to a juvenile facility until he turns 21. If he were to commit serious violations while in a juvenile facility, he would then be subject to adult sanctions, which could include life in prison.

An autopsy said the 3-year-old girl died from "multisystem organ failure," a medical term for serious infection over a period of time from traumatic injuries.
