Poverty rate of children in the Youngstown School District growing at an alarming rate

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The poverty rate for children in the Youngstown School District is more than double the national rate. And it's getting worse.

The latest census shows that the number of students from poor families in the city has increased from 42 percent in 2010 to 50 percent in 2011.

Nationally, the poverty rate for students is 21 percent.

City schools try to help out by offering free breakfast and lunches to students. "We have to build a relationship with those kids and families and take responsibility for their learning. You have to make sure the kids come to school. They are loved. Feel like somebody cares about them. We feed them, keep them warm, safe and dry," said Dr. Connie Hathorn, Superintendent of Youngstown City Schools.

The Youngstown School District also has a program to provide uniforms, coats and other items to students in need.
