New legislation could affect mayor's court in small communities

Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A bill to eliminate one of Youngstown's three municipal judge positions, is finally on its way to Governor Kasich's desk.

The Ohio House passed the bill Thursday afternoon.

Supporters say it's an important cost saving move as the city shrinks in size and the judges handle less cases.

Representative Bob Hagan says in a statement that it's the first step in a broader consolidation of the lower county court system.

The bill includes an amendment that would close some mayor's courts in the state.

If the governor signs the legislation, villages like Summitville in Columbiana County would no longer have mayor's court for speeding violations.
