YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown State University will begin a nationwide search for a new president.
It comes after Dr. Cynthia Anderson informed YSU's Board of Trustees that she plans to retire when her contract expires June 30th of 2013.
Dr. Anderson is on vacation and not available for comment about her plans, but she notified YSU's Board of Trustees about her decision last Wednesday.
Anderson says after nearly 40 years with the university, "It is with mixed emotions that I retire as president of YSU effective July 1, 2013.
Dr. Anderson became the first Mahoning Valley native, the first female, and the first YSU graduate to be named president of Youngstown State University.
Ron Cole, the Director of Communications for YSU says, "Dr. Anderson has been part of the YSU family for 40 years and the president for two and half years. It will be three years when she retires. This will be the end of her contract. I can't speak for her in terms of reasons for why now. It obviously seemed like a good time for her."
The Chairman of YSU's Board of Trustees Dr. Sudershan Garg expressed his gratitude for Anderson's service, and says the retirement comes with "great regret and mixed emotions."
He says they will need to find a replacement that is as good as Dr. Anderson, who is known for her energy, knowledge of YSU, and is an experienced administrator.
The board will launch a national search for the next president at the start of the New Year, and hopes to have Dr. Anderson's replacement before she retires on July 1st.
