COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's attorney general is reminding consumers to read the fine print on contracts before they join a gym or a health club in this new year.
Mike DeWine says people can be surprised months later when they find they are paying more than expected for a membership or can't cancel when they want.
DeWine is urging those who resolve to get healthy in 2013 to make sure they understand all costs of membership, cancellation policies and length of the contract, which should not exceed three years.
Under state law, Ohioans have three business days to cancel contracts for dance studio lessons and health spa services, such as gym memberships. Cancellations must be in writing and postmarked on the third business day after the first service is available.
