Crews tearing down historic church on YSU campus

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Crews have begun tearing down a historic church on the Youngstown State University campus.

Work began Tuesday to demolish the Pilgrim Collegiate Church, which was built in 1922. The university bought it several years ago to make sure the property wasn't developed commercially.

Campus spokesman Ron Cole tells our print partner, The Vindicator, that the location will be used for green space, at least in the short term.

The university decided to tear down the church because it couldn't identify a feasible use for it. Needed repairs, including a new roof, made restoration too costly.

Pews, woodwork and a chandelier were sold by the university.
