Goaltenders Fleury, Vokoun expect to be busy

Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tomas Vokoun hadn't been a backup goaltender for more than a decade before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins last spring.

Considering how busy Vokoun might be during the NHL's cramped 48-game schedule, the job might not feel like a second-string job anyway.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma says he plans to use Vokoun liberally during the season so as not to put too heavy a workload on starter Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins will play games on consecutive nights eight times during the season. There are also stretches where they'll pack five games into a week.

Bylsma says he intends to keep both goaltenders fresh so they're ready to go when the playoffs begin.

The 36-year-old Vokoun says he is ready to help in any way he can as he searches for his first Stanley Cup.
