Hundreds at gun rights rally at Ohio Statehouse

Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Several hundred people came out to support gun rights at the Ohio Statehouse.

Organizers estimate that the crowd grew to between 700 and 900 people Saturday afternoon in Columbus.

Many carried signs, waved flags and marched around the Statehouse.

Activists promoted the "Guns Across America" rallies at state capitals across the U.S. just days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of federal gun-control proposals.

Matt Smith of Cincinnati helped organize the rally in Ohio.

He tells The Columbus Dispatch that he wants people to know that gun owners are like anyone else and there's no reason to fear them.

Others say they wanted to show support for responsible gun ownership.

Columbus police report no problems at the rally.
