For many, King holiday a day to volunteer

Updated:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - For many in the Philadelphia area, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday has been a day to roll up their sleeves rather than kick back and relax.

The Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service says thousands have been taking part in various projects at Girard College in north Philadelphia, with tens of thousands more scheduled to participate in events around the region.

Director Todd Bernstein said the events include service projects, workshops and training, as well as a community health and wellness fair and events for children.

Bernstein says officials hoped the events will serve not just as a day of volunteering but as a springboard for year-round community involvement.
