According to extensive research, The Texas Center for Reproductive Acupuncture shares new data showing the increase in couples struggling to conceive after one year of trying.

The Texas Center for Reproductive Acupuncture today announced new research in reproductive health statistics. According to a study released in Fertility and Sterility this month, infertility, a diagnosis given to couples unable to conceive after a year of trying, is rising and affects more people than you think. More than 7,600 women between the ages of 15 and 44 were surveyed. Out of this sample, 288 were actually trying to get pregnant. After a year of unprotected sex, 15-16% of these couples still could not become pregnant. This finding supports infertility as a widespread, common problem faced by men and women.

TCRA believes this study is important because for many couples, this new find necessitates a search for an infertility cure. While there are many options, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a popular one with 150,000 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycles received in the United States in 2010. The Society for ART cites male factor infertility and diminishing ovarian reserve as the leading reasons for IVF cycles received. They also report infertility to have risen from 8.5% in 1992 to 15% in 2010, and possibly even more since the collection of this data.

At an average of $15,000 spent per IVF cycle, and with the population affected by infertility increasing, it may be assumed that more couples will look for alternative therapies for infertility due to financial limitations and diversity in personal beliefs and needs. Many fertility patients have become pregnant without the use of IVF or other ART.
