BOARDMAN, Ohio - Firefighters battled a blaze at Mill Creek Village Apartments early Monday morning.

The fire broke out shortly after 8 a.m. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming out of the roof of one of the complex's buildings.

A resident who called 911 said they believe the fire originated in apartment 216.

Austintown and Canfield Fire Departments were called to assist the Boardman Fire Department at the scene.

The fire was eventually placed under control by fire departments shortly before noon.

Injuries

One female was taken from the scene in an ambulance. Fire officials say they found her unconscious in her kitchen that morning.

No information is available on the victim's identity or condition.

Firefighters say everyone else was evacuated from the apartment complex.

Risk of Spreading

21 News reporter Lauren Lindvig reported the fire passed through a wall into a second building, creating an additional problem for firefighters. Officials are working to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring building.

Frozen fire hydrants also provided an additional challenge for officials in putting out the blaze. Firefighters are also say they had an issue keeping trucks filled with water.

21 News Reporter Lindsay McCoy was on the scene and told  us an odor of smoke could be detected a distance away from the complex. She also reported that the surrounding area was evacuated.

Displaced Residents

Officials say they had trouble providing a place for displaced residents to stay due to hotels being full because of the oil and gas industry.

Jim Bacon, general manager of the Boardman Inn said he has about 15 rooms available for anyone seeking a place to stay.

Aftermath

Fire officials add that while there is a significant amount of damage, they are not declaring the area a total loss.

No cause for the fire has been determined yet.
