Correa found guilty of murder

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Guilty on all counts, that's the verdict that was handed down Tuesday in the 2011 New Year's Day shooting of a Youngstown man.

"I had no reason to shoot that man, had no motive to shoot that man," said 22-year-old Daro Correa.

Correa protested his guilty verdict and apologized, but Randy Cappelli's family wasn't buying it.

Correa was found guilty on several counts including murder, arson, robbery, and tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to 43 years to life.

The Campbell man was found dead next to his burning car on Shady Run Road the morning of January 1, 2011 with multiple gunshot wounds, some to his head. A puddle of blood on the road was found nearby.

"No matter what demons Randy Capelli fought in his life, he certainly did not deserve to die as he did," said Judge John Durkin, Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Cappelli's family agrees. "Randy would do anything for anybody for nothing. They didn't have to give him nothing, you didn't even have to ask him," said Vincent Cappelli, the victim's brother.

Cappelli's sister Dina says waiting for final word on Correa's punishment has been tough and she's happy with the lengthy stay he will have in prison.

"It's been real hard. We've waited two years for this, so we're really happy that he got what he did, he deserves it, he deserves to rot," Dina Cappelli said.

A second suspect, Emmanuel Dawson, is indicted on the same charges in Cappelli's death and is still awaiting trial.
