AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Officials at the Akron-Canton Airport say the proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways could mean potential growth for the facility.

The two airlines announced an $11 billion merger Thursday that will turn American into the world's biggest airline.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that US Airways operates nine nonstop flights a day out of Akron-Canton - five to Charlotte, N.C., three to Philadelphia and one to Washington, D.C.

Airport spokeswoman Kristie Van Auken says American hasn't flown out of the Akron-Canton airport for many years. She said the merger could be "a great opportunity" for the airport.

The director of the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport told the newspaper that the merger should have little to no impact on airport operations there.
