Dog dies in Petersburg house fire

Posted: Updated:

PETERSBURG, Ohio - No one was home when a fire broke out at a Petersburg home on Friday afternoon.

Springfield Fire Fighters and crews from East Palestine were called to a home on East Garfield shortly after 4:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, a dog perished in the heavy smoke. But rescue workers were able to save the family cat.

"The firemen brought the cat out. It was still breathing, so we took it up to the squad. I'm assuming they gave it oxygen. So that's what they're trying to do right now. The vet's on his way," said Springfield Fire Chief Matt Gebhardt.

At this point, fire fighters don't know where the fire originated.
