Posted: Updated:

MARION, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a car trying to beat a train in central Ohio has been struck on the tracks, and the two people inside the vehicle have been seriously hurt.

The Department of Public Safety says the crash happened Monday night in the village of Prospect. Marion troopers say 18-year-old Connor Helman, of Prospect, was behind the wheel when he tried to cross the tracks in front of a CSX Transportation train. They say the front of his car hit the train's lead engine.

Helman and his passenger, 21-year-old Brandon Phillips, of Richwood, were trapped in the car. After rescuers freed them, they were flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus and are listed in stable condition.

None of the CSX workers was hurt.
