BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting says he expects his team to compete for a World Series title, not simply end two decades of losing.

Nutting said Wednesday he is "incredibly optimistic" the Pirates can take another step forward following a promising 2012 in which Pittsburgh won 79 games and remained in playoff contention until the final weeks of the season.

Though a late fade sent the Pirates to a losing record for the 20th straight year, Nutting says he has not lost faith in manager Clint Hurdle or general manager Neal Huntington in terms of putting a quality product on the field.

The Pirates extended Hurdle's contract through 2014 on Tuesday, a move Nutting called "appropriate." He added the goal this year is not to just win 82 games, but bring home a sixth World Series title.
