Freezing rain could impact the morning commute

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Snow, sleet and freezing rain caused travel nightmares across the nation's midsection on Thursday, and the wintry mess is heading east.

Snowfall rates of 1-3" per hour occurred in parts of Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska and some of the snow was accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Meanwhile, a glaze of ice weighed down tree limbs and power lines in parts of Arkansas and southern Missouri.

While many have been inconvenienced by the snow, the moisture will actually prove to be beneficial in the long run across the drought-stricken heartland.

While the storm will weaken Thursday night, much of the Ohio and Mahoning Valley will have sleet and freezing rain to contend with late at night and during the first half of the day on Friday.
