HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, PLCB, today encouraged community organizations, law enforcement, colleges and universities and schools to apply for the two-year grants aimed at preventing underage and dangerous drinking.
"While alcohol is legal for those 21 and older, we understand it can have a significant negative impact on individuals, families and communities when used irresponsibly," said Joseph E. Brion, chairman. "We provide these funds to address some of the issues associated with dangerous drinking to ultimately improve the overall health and wellness of our communities."
In an effort to increase the effectiveness of programs funded, the grant cycle has been extended to two-years, with a maximum award of $40,000 per organization. The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and are subject to the availability of funds, the amount of which will be determined by the Bureau of Alcohol Education.
Also, two letters of support from partnering organizations or agencies will now be required when applying for the grant, a departure from previous years. There is no limit on the number of organizations from a single county or municipality that may apply, but each must be a separate entity.
"Lengthening the grant cycle from one to two years and increasing the amount of the award, gives organizations more time and resources to make an impact on their community," said Robert S. Marcus, board member. "By making these changes, we believe we are increasing the likelihood of their success."
The funds are intended to initiate programs focused on strategies to reduce underage and dangerous drinking. Some of the initiatives funded in previous years include increased police patrols, social norms campaigns, Parents Who Host (Lose the Most) campaigns, college assessment surveys, online alcohol education programs, peer trainers and more.
