Check out hunger at Giant Eagle to feed families in our community

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Through March 31, customers can help provide food to those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at any Giant Eagle location in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The donation will be added to their grocery bill. Non-perishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the stores.

Last year, Giant Eagle stores collected $62,722 through Check Out Hunger as part of the Harvest for Hunger campaign, which enabled the Food Bank to distribute $940,830 worth of food to people right here in the Mahoning Valley. Giant Eagle stores in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties have set a goal of $85,000 this year through the donation coupons.

Harvest for Hunger is a month-long food and funds drive that takes place in 21 counties of northeast Ohio and benefits four Feeding America member food banks including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. All funds raised and food collected in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties remain in our community to feed our friends and neighbors. The 2013 Harvest for Hunger sponsors are: Giant Eagle, 21 WFMJ & WBCB, The Vindicator, Cumulus Radio Stations Y-103, K105 and HOT 101, and UFCW Local 880.

Second Harvest Food Bank distributes food to 153 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These organizations include faith-based pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. To learn more about how you can get involved in the Harvest for Hunger campaign, please call 330.792.5522 or visit www.mahoningvalleyscondharvest.org.
