Mahoning County Auditor concerned about proposed cut in Ohio sales tax

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - One of the Governor John Kasich's tax overhaul proposals calls for cutting Ohio's state sales tax from 5.5 percent to 5 percent.

But Mahoning Auditor Mike Sciortino says he has concerns that county and municipal governments won't be able to provide services since about 70 percent of the county's budget depends on the sales tax revenues.

"Safety forces, criminal justice, central administrative services are all generated by our collection of the sales tax. So you have to feel our concern when you start mixing with formulas for not only collection but allocation from the state," Sciortino said.

The governor has said his plan will generate revenue by broadening the tax base, yet lowering the rate.

The tax proposals will go through hearings in Ohio's House and Senate before a final bill is passed and becomes law.
