Local Democrats endorse candidate for Youngstown mayor

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- Local Democrats endorsed a former county commissioner for Youngstown mayor on Tuesday night.

Central and executive committees of the Mahoning County Democratic party voted to endorse John McNally.

McNally laid out his plan for mayor including focus on job creation and retention efforts, continued demolition of homes, and to help provide economic opportunities for residents.

McNally received 76 percent of votes while City Council President Jamael Tito Brown received 24 percent.

"This is just one stop on the campaign trail. This is about moving our city forward," Brown said. My votes are with the citizens and people of the community. I'm out to get the voters and the voters have to want to vote for me."

Another candidate, Matthew Smith, failed to get any percentage of the Democrats vote.

The members also gathered at St. Luke's Hall in Boardman to make endorsements for Struthers council and to make some changes to their party's constitution.

There will be plenty of time for the candidates to campaign. This year's primary takes place on May 7th.
