YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A Boardman man who stabbed his wife at their home then held police at bay for hours while threatening to jump off a bridge has been sentenced.

John Sylvester was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to attempted murder, kidnapping and two assault charges.

Last June, Sylvester held police at bay at the Market Street bridge for hours after the stabbing before being talked down.

"He ripped his family apart that day," said his wife on Wednesday in court. "With every stab and every slice of that knife. 16 years does not justify this type of cruelty."

Prosecutors said this isn't Sylvesters first run in with the law for a crime of this type. He previously served 9 years for the shooting and attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

His attorney said in court, Sylvester was previously diagnosed as bi-polar.
