Investigator: autopsy does not show flu as cause of death of six-year-old

Posted: Updated:

BELOIT, Ohio -  The Stark County coroner's investigator said that preliminary results do not indicate that a six-year-old died from the flu.

Investigator Rick Walters said the office is still waiting for results of samples taken from Kiersten Bernier, who died Friday with flu-like symptoms, before making a final determination. However, results of an autopsy performed do not seem to indicate the flu as the cause of death.

Walters said that the child had been taken to the hospital after exhibiting flu-like symptoms 24 hours before her death. The autopsy was performed six hours later, and samples were rushed to the county for analysis.

Walters said that the school the victim attended, West Branch Elementary, might have had somewhat of a flu epidemic prior to the incident.
