Proposal would boost Ohio's speed limit to 70 mph

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio Senate panel is considering changes that would increase the state's maximum speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on interstate highways outside of urban areas.

The Senate Transportation Committee accepted the revisions to the state's transportation budget on Monday. The panel is expected to vote on it this week.

The proposal also would set the maximum speed limit for interstate freeway outerbelts in urban areas at 65 mph and on freeways in congested areas at 55 mph.

Among other changes, the budget bill now includes the governor's plan to raise about $1.5 billion for state highway projects through Ohio Turnpike bonds. And an added amendment would make sure that at least 90% of the funds would be spend on projects within 75 miles of the turnpike.
