Racing commission asks Penn National to rework building plans

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Racing Commission asked Penn National Gaming Tuesday to return to the drawing board on the company's proposed building plans for a racino in Austintown.

The commissioners are concerned about the ratio of seats around the race track, 220, to the number of VLTs, or slot machines, in the casino, 1,000.

The commission wants Penn National to rework the design for the racino to allow more outdoor seating and possibly add bleacher seating for more outdoor space.

Penn National is asking the commission to transfer a license for Beulah Park in Grove City to the Austintown racino. The company will need building plans approved before the commission grants them permission to transfer the license.

Work is already in progress at the Austintown site to prepare the area for building and Penn National officials want to start building the racino in April.

The next meeting of the commission is March 20.
