Youngstown bishop praises choice for pope

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The bishop of the Youngstown diocese praised the choice to install a Jesuit as the 266th pope.

"It's nice to have one of mine in that position," said Bishop George Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown.

Murry, a Jesuit himself, said Jorge Bergoglio of Argentine was known for being a champion of the poor.

In fact, Bergoglio chose the name Pope Francis I as an homage to a 13th-century priest who lived in poverty.

Murry said with so many people struggling for basic needs and  the gap between the rich and poor expanding, a Jesuit pope is essential.

"Choosing a man who has a reputation for being dedicated to the poor sends a message to the community," he said.
