FDA warns about antibiotic

Posted: Updated:

SILVER SPRING,  Md. - The FDA is warning patients about the use of a popular antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

A study at Vanderbilt University found that Zithromax, commonly sold in a Z-Pak, can cause abnormal and possibly fatal heart rhythms.

Patients who have low levels of potassium or magnesium are at a higher risk as well as those who have a slow heart rate or are treating an irregular heartbeat.
