WILLOUGYBY, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's recreational boating fleet continues to grow.

For the fourth straight year, the number of Ohio boat registrations reached a record high, totaling 435,310 vessels of all kinds in 2012.

The prior record was 426,674 vessels registered with the Ohio Division of Watercraft in 2011.

The registrations include boats, jet-propelled personal watercraft, sailboats, canoes, kayaks and rowboats.

State watercraft officials tell The (Willoughby) News-Herald (/bit.ly/YYnOA8) that the growing number of recreational boating registrations has been fueled by the popularity of canoeing and kayaking.

Ten percent of registered pleasure boats in Ohio in 2012 were personal watercraft, including the commercially trademarked names like Jet Skies and Waverunners.

The top five counties for boat registrations, in order, are the counties that are home to Columbus, Cleveland, Akron, Cincinnati and Dayton.
