COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Two Ohio universities and an Ohio company are working to develop a more comfortable and useful prosthetic system for veterans who have had above-the-knee leg amputations.
The project is supported by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the University of Akron and WillowWood are collaborating in the project. The Mt. Sterling-based WillowWood develops prosthetic products.
The prosthetic system will be developed for patients at VA medical centers across the country. The patients have had amputations involving removal of the leg at the thigh, while leaving part of the thigh bone intact.
Officials say the proposed solution to improve the fit, function and comfort of prosthetic sockets involves a system made from polymer materials that draw heat away from the leg.
