YSU men ready for some postseason tournament play

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - For the first time in the Jerry Slocum era, the YSU Men's basketball team is playing in a postseason tournament.

The Penguins host Oakland in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com tournament on Tuesday night, but it's not where they want to be playing in the future.

"Our aspirations are clearly to win the horizon league and be in the NCAA tournament. But in the same breath, for the first time in Youngstown State history as a Division I program to be in a post season tournament like this, I'm happy for the university and proud of our program," Slocum said.

Here's a closer look at Oakland. They finished the season 16 and 16 and played three big time schools, Pitt, Michigan State and Tennessee. They lost to all three.

There are two common opponents. The Golden Grizzlies beat North Dakota State and Valparaiso while the Penguins lost to the Bison and split with the Crusaders.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at Beeghly Center. Click here for ticket information.
