German students receive key to Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mayor Charles Sammarone gave a group of students from the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany the key to the city.

The 13 students and their teacher are in town working with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation on a planning project that assists in the city's revitalization.

"There are other potentials that people in Youngstown have not built on so far like the industrial heritage," says Thorstein Weichman, a professor at Dortmund. "In Ruhr, Germany, I've seen a lot of development based on the industrial heritage, it was turned into cultural facilities, and people really changed their mind about the industrial heritage."

The cities of Dortmund and Youngstown share many similarities with steel industry pasts, he says.

The group from Germany will focus on the regeneration of the city's riverfront and neighborhoods.
