HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Now that a liquor privatization bill has been approved by Pennsylvania's House of Representatives, the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate.
In a nearly straight party-line vote, the Republican majority handed Gov. Tom Corbett a victory that he and his allies fought hard for, even though the bill differs radically from his original plan to auction off the 600 state liquor stores.
The measure would phase out the state-run stores county by county, as beer distributors and other private operators are allowed buy at least 1,200 liquor and wine licenses. House leaders fast-tracked the bill, which went from committee to final passage in four days.
Such speedy action is unlikely in the Senate, where two senators have filed competing bills that would keep the state stores open.
