Canfield students honor WWII Veterans with impromptu salute

Posted: Updated:

CANFIELD, Ohio - It's a moment many say left them speechless.

On a school trip to Washington D.C., eighth grade students from Canfield Middle School lined up as a group of World War II veterans exited a tour bus then applauded the veterans, shook their hands and gave them high-fives as the group made their way to the National WWII Memorial.

The impromptu moment was caught on tape.

"It's one of those once-in-a-life-time things," says eighth grader Mikki Letsitsky. "You can't walk down the street everyday and see all those veterans just walk by you."

"It really made me happy that we could honor them and show respect to them on just an ordinary day," says eighth grader Dag Marstahl. "I think it just brought a smile to their faces."

Those who were there say the act of appreciation left many speechless.

"For our kids it's a part of history, but they're not connected to it," says school principal Joe Maroni. "I think the experience we had was a way to connect them to the soldiers of World War II."

The students have since returned to the classroom, and although they will not study WWII until 10th grade, they already have a lesson to share.

"Just being thankful for all these people who were fighting for us in WWII and dying," says eighth grader Ashton Lockshaw.

"The younger generations can still appreciate them, even more than just on Memorial Day and Veterans Day when the whole country has their eyes on them," says eighth grader Lake Bennett.
