Elderly woman holds intruder at gunpoint

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - An elderly woman was forced to defend herself and her property Wednesday evening.

The 80-year-old woman who lives alone on the city's south side was in her living room when a man broke into the house around 8 p.m.

Even though she has trouble breathing, she managed to get a .22 pistol and fired at the intruder. She then held the man at gunpoint until police officers arrived.

"The guy came in, broke through both front windows in the front room," says Eugene Underwood, the woman's stepson. "He asked her what she was doing and he kept coming."

He says the intruder got in the house and she shot at him.

Police say the man who broke into the house was not shot. He's being treated for cuts from broken glass.

Charges are pending.
