Pirates bucking convention in batting lineup

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Garrett Jones knows he doesn't fit the typical description of a player who bats second.

The 6-foot-4 Jones hit a career-high 27 homers last year for the Pirates and spent most of his time batting cleanup. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle says moving Jones to second allows him to see more fastballs ahead of All-Star Andrew McCutchen in the third spot.

The decision to move up Jones to means Neil Walker will start the season hitting sixth. Walker split most of his time last season between the Nos. 2 and 5 slots in the batting order.

Walker had 1 of Pittsburgh's three hits in an opening day 3-1 loss to Chicago while went Jones went 0 for 4. The teams play again Wednesday night.
