Shopping plaza exit in Calcutta getting the attention of ODOT

Posted: Updated:

ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A shopping plaza exit In Calcutta with a history of traffic accidents will be getting the attention of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Officials of St. Clair Township say the exit from Dunham's Plaza has been accident prone ever since the widening of State Route 170.

The police chief says it now requires drivers to cross over three lanes of traffic to make a left hand turn and too many times they are not successful.

"As of last month we've had 62 car crashes at that location because of people trying to exit making a left hand turn," said Donald Hyatt, Police Chief of St. Clair Township.

The township has a meeting with ODOT and the property owner on May 7th to discuss possible solutions, which may include closing the exit or making left hand turns illegal.
