Pirates send P Irwin to minors, recall OF Presley

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned right-handed pitcher Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and called up outfielder Alex Presley.

Irwin made a spot start in Sunday's 10-7 win over Cincinnati but did not factor in the decision, giving up five runs, four earned on six hits in 4 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked four. Irwin started in place of Wandy Rodriguez, who is nursing a strained left hamstring.

Presley hit .357 with a home run and two RBI in seven games for Indianapolis.

Pittsburgh minor league right-handed pitcher Kyle McPherson will not pitch for two weeks due to forearm discomfort. McPherson, who competed for the Pirates fifth starting spot in spring training, received an anti-inflammatory injection on Monday. He will be re-evaluated at the end of the month.
