Racino still in the talking phase

Posted: Updated:

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - The Ohio Racing Commission, which normally meets only one a month, has been meeting weekly as it seeks to resolve issues with track developer Penn-National Gaming over total seating for patrons at the new track.

The company already has agreed to one upgrade, but it's top executives say and additional investment in seating is not justified based on current market conditions.

"With talking to Penn-National, yes they have said to us that, 'listen, ther is a limit as to what we're going to spend here,'" says Austintown Township trustee Jim Davis.

Davis, who has traveled to Columbus for each meeting of the racing commission, will be there again on Wednesday with hopes for a resolution.

"I've been assured by both parties, from the Racing Commission and Penn-National, that they are diligently working together to try to get this resolved by Wednesday," Davis says.

Penn-National wanted construction to be well underway by this time, but instead the site is sitting idle, and Davis says that poses a problem for the developers construction timetable.

"We need to start moving now to get this to where our construction would be under roof come winter of 2013," says Davis. "And by that they've invested $18 million in the property to this point with what they've done."

Davis says the two sides are still meeting and talking, and that's the most important thing.
