Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio  -  A moment of silence was held at 2:19 a.m. in memory of murdered Youngstown Police Officer Michael Hartzell. The exact time that Officer Hartzell was killed in the line of duty ten years ago.

Police cruisers normally dispatched to emergencies heard these words, "Attention all cars.  Let's observe a moment of silence for our fallen officer, Michael T. Hartzell. Shield number 1085, end of watch April 29, 2003. Zero, 2:19AM.  Forever missed, never forgotten.  God speed Mike."

Patrolman Hartzell was gunned down ten years ago in an unprovoked attack as he sat in his police car near Powers Auditorium.

Martin Koliser was convicted of the crime and sent to Ohio's death row. He later committed suicide in his jail cell.

Officer Hartzell's memory lives on through the Michael T. Hartzell Memorial Scholarship at YSU.

An annual golf outing, motorcycle run, and a rugby classic are held to help raise money to benefit the scholarship effort.
