NEW CASTLE, Penn. - A New Castle man already in custody for failing to register with the state police and update his Megan's Law information is now accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.

39-year-old Ivan Carl Schaefer is being held in the Lawrence County jail on charges of statutory sex assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and unlawful contact with a minor.

The alleged victim's mother said she had no idea about Schaefer's criminal past and allowed him to stay in their house for about a month.

"He was just a monster. If I would have caught him in this act, I would have killed him," said the alleged victim's mother.

Schaefer is being held on $100,000 bond. He's due back in court May 8.
